The long-praised “queen of the baroque violin”(Sunday Times), Rachel Podger returns to Korea in ten years. For this third visit to Korea, she will be accompanied by UK’s most prominent period-instrument orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment(OAE) with which she has regularly played as a guest leader. Podger has everything one can ask for a baroque musician; she presents perfect musical skills, warm and vibrant tonal color, and well-balanced, yet spontaneous performance. In 1999, she made her solo debut with the album of Bach Sonatas and Partitas for Violin, marking a great success with comments like ‘inspirational originality elicits inspirational playing’(BBC Music Magazine) Since then, every album she has released through Channel Classics including Telemann, Vivaldi, Biber, and Mozart received unconditional support from baroque music fans. In 2018, she was also named Gramophone’s ‘Artist of the Year’ Award. Meanwhile, OAE is known to have conceived an ideal case of managing a group; it propels its artistic direction through a democratic discussion between the musicians without a chief conductor or an artistic director. Thus far, the group has presented a number of significant projects and masterpiece albums, solidifying their presence as a ‘hitmaker’ and expanding the musical horizon from the 18-century age of enlightenment to baroque and modern. After her long absence, Podger will return to Korea with OAE to play Vivaldi’s ‘The Four Seasons.’ Despite the relaxed tempo, Podger’s Vivaldi will be brimming with vigorous spirit, sprinkled with perfect virtuosity and delicate ornaments at the essential moments, proving to us that this piece is not an old warhorse, but a masterpiece to be savored in every different way. Various Italian baroque concertos, including Corelli, Geminiani, and Manfredini will also be part of the line-up, increasing the excitement of baroque music fans who have been longing for Podger’s live performance.
